Every Work Is For The Glory of God
As a child, I always under the impression that nurses were the kindest people on earth, possessing an almost magical ability to heal. My grandmother was often ill, and seeing her recover after clinic visits brought me immense comfort. This inspired me to become a nurse, driven by the way they cared for my favourite person, my grandma. However, I cannot pinpoint exactly when my perception began to change. But over time, I started losing faith in the healthcare system and realized that nurses are just human beings like the rest of us, prone to dishonesty and idle ways.
In early April, I decided to visit home because I missed my family. At some point in my stay, I had to go to the clinic. One thing you need to know about township clinics is that you can expect to wait for most of your day, and I was prepared for that. As I sat in the patient waiting area, observing the long lines of people waiting to be seen by the nurses. I noticed something disheartening, the nurses seemed unfazed by the long lines. They chatted casually and entered consulting rooms to have random conversations with their colleagues, causing those who were supposed to be attending to patients to stop working and listen. My heart sank as it hit me: they were paid every month for work they were not doing.
Ephesians 4:28 states, "Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need." Did you realize that failing to fulfil the responsibilities of your job while still receiving payment constitutes stealing? Some might question how this qualifies as theft if nothing physical was taken without notice. However, consider this: when you receive your salary every month or week, it is in exchange for the work expected of you. Therefore, compensated for tasks not completed amounts to both deception and theft.
This verse also applies to students as much as workers, it also serves as a guiding light, illuminating the path of righteousness and service. In our academic pursuits and daily endeavours, this verse urges us to work diligently, not merely for personal gain, but for the glory of God. As students, we are called to approach our studies, projects, and responsibilities with integrity and excellence, knowing that our efforts reflect our dedication to honouring God. Just as the verse encourages us to engage in honest labour and use our skills to benefit others, we are reminded that our work is not in vain when done with a spirit of service and humility. By committing ourselves to working diligently and using our talents for the greater good, we can glorify God in all that we do, making a positive impact on our communities and fulfilling our purpose as students called to serve with love and dedication.
The Bible also teaches the value of diligence and integrity in our work. Colossians 3:23-24 states, "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." This verse reminds us that our work should be done with wholehearted dedication, as if we are serving God Himself, which elevates the importance of integrity in every task we undertake.
Additionally, Proverbs 12:11 says, "Those who work their land will have abundant food, but those who chase fantasies have no sense." This highlights the importance of working diligently and focusing on our responsibilities rather than engaging in idle pursuits. It underscores the idea that honest labour leads to prosperity and fulfilment, while neglecting our duties results in lack and dissatisfaction.
This experience deeply affected me. It made me realize the importance of integrity and the value of honest work. It is not just about receiving a pay cheque; it is about earning it through resolute and sincere efforts. This realization reinforced my commitment to the principles of hard work and honesty. Whether you are working in corporate or are a student, hard work and honesty is crucial and brings glory to God.
To students, your commitment to working diligently for God is truly inspiring and commendable. By dedicating yourselves to your studies with the intention of honouring God, you are embracing a higher purpose that goes beyond personal achievement. Your discipline, integrity, and perseverance are not only shaping your own futures but also setting a powerful example for those around you. Remember that every effort you put into your education, every challenge you overcome, and every success you achieve is a testament to your faith and dedication. Continue to strive for excellence, knowing that your hard work is a form of worship and a service to the greater good. Your journey is a beacon of light, demonstrating the profound impact of integrating faith with learning. Keep pushing forward with passion and dedication, for in doing so, you are not only growing academically but also spiritually, making a difference in the world and honouring God with your talents and efforts.
