When You are a Son

When you're not a son

You can't

take control of the TV remote, or

eat the chocolate on the shelf

You can't

find comfort by playing with father’s beard hairs, or

plead something for yourself

No, you can't

when you're not a son

When you're not a son

You don't

know where the vegetables are kept, or

understand the family in-joke

You don't

have the right to an inheritance, or

get asked to wash the dishes for visiting folk

No, you don't

When you're not a son

When you're not a son

You feel

like an imposter, even when welcomed

temporary, because you'll soon outlive your stay

You feel

awkward asking for things

like you need to earn your right or even pay to belong

You feel

like Cinderella; you'll sweep and clean,

at the fringes always watching, never truly seen

afraid, ever afraid, that you'll be told to go, “leave!”

When you're not a son

You have no home

No true belonging

You can be disposed, overlooked, forgotten

After all, who are you when you're not the son?

But what if you are...?

When you are a son

You can

fill up the bath to the brim

throw your clothes on the floor

You can

cuddle and lounge

and bang doors

Be real!

You can

When you're a son

When you are a son

You don't

have to ask permission to enter the father’s office

or hesitate to ask for dad’s advice

You don't

have to worry that you'll be stranded or abandoned

or need to quiver and scrounge because you're blood, not random

No, you don't fear

When you're a son

When you are a son

You feel

at ease, you know who you are

and safe, because your father's got your back

You feel

the warmth of your family,

and sure, because once a son, your position is never under attack

Fact

You feel peace

When you're a son

If you’ve surrendered your life to THE Son, God Himself who lived, died and resurrected,

Don't you know you've been made his sibling?

Adopted

The legal paperwork's all gone through

Stamped, sealed, approved

No longer a beggar at the gate, but a son at the table

Dining with the Father who chose you from before you were able to chose Him

The Father of lights, Creator of the world

God and Judge, Holy Being unrivalled

You could never earn your place

You don’t deserve it

You came disheveled, broken and burdened by sin

But God the Father in abundant love saw it fit

To clothe you in robes of righteousness and give you the family ring

You belong to Him and He is yours

He's the authority and He's forgiven you

So there's no denying it

Embrace the child in you

Let loose your real emotions, Baba can take it, see

Accept the fact that you're safe, for all eternity

How dare you say you're not a son

When THE Son died for you

So, what if you are?

Live like it.
