Blessed: A Life Rooted in God
When I think about the word “blessed,” or about someone who is truly blessed, my mind often goes to the well-known Beatitudes found in Matthew 5:3–12. These verses beautifully describe what it means to be blessed: to live for God.
On many occasions, when someone greets me and asks, “How are you?” I respond, “I am blessed.” Yet, as I have been meditating on what it truly means to be blessed, I felt led to explore other passages of Scripture and continue pondering this profound truth. I asked myself: What does the whole counsel of God say about being blessed?
As I searched the Scriptures, I noticed that many verses align with the Beatitudes and expand on the theme of blessedness. From the Old Testament through to the New Testament, we see how God has consistently revealed what it means to be blessed in His sight. It is both encouraging and challenging to observe the characteristics of a blessed person as described in the Word of God.
Here are just a few examples:
1. Blessed are those who trust in the Lord
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord.” (Jeremiah 17:7)
True blessedness begins with trust, placing our confidence not in ourselves or in the world, but fully in God. Our hope must be rooted in Him alone.
2. Blessed are those who delight in God’s Word
“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly… but his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in His law doth he meditate day and night.” (Psalm 1:1–2)
A blessed life is shaped by God’s Word. It involves separation from ungodly influences and a deep, ongoing meditation on His truth.
3. Blessed are those who remain steadfast in truth
“Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust, and respects not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.” (Psalm 40:4)
The blessed person is not swayed by pride or deception but remains anchored in God’s truth and faithfulness.
4. Blessed are those who fear the Lord
“Blessed is the man that fears the Lord, that delights greatly in His commandments.” (Psalm 112:1)
To fear the Lord is to reverence Him, honor Him, and joyfully obey His commands. This reverence produces a life that reflects His character.
5. Blessed are those who show compassion
“Blessed is he that considers the poor: the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble.” (Psalm 41:1)
God’s heart for the needy is clear. A blessed person reflects this heart through kindness, generosity, and compassion toward others.
6. Blessed are those who are forgiven
“Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.” (Psalm 32:1)
Above all, blessedness is rooted in grace. To be forgiven, restored, and made right with God is the greatest blessing anyone can receive.
From these passages, we see that the life of a blessed person revolves around God, His will, His Word, and His righteousness. It is a life yielded to Him in trust, obedience, and humility.
This challenges a common mindset in the world today. Many equate being blessed with material wealth, success, or possessions. But Scripture makes it clear that true blessedness is not defined by what we have, but by our relationship with God. One cannot truly claim to be blessed without first receiving the gift of grace and walking in fellowship with Him.
It raises an important question: do those who pursue riches and worldly success recognize that these things do not make them blessed? According to God’s Word, blessedness begins and is sustained through a relationship with Him.
Based on these truths, we must ask ourselves: Are we truly blessed?
I trust that we are. But if there are areas in our lives that do not yet reflect these characteristics, may we, with God’s help, strive toward them. May we grow in trusting Him, delighting in His Word, walking in obedience, and embracing His grace.
And may we come to understand more deeply that to be blessed is not merely something we say but a life we live in Christ.
